PRODUCT DETAILS
Racing brake discs are the core component of high-performance braking systems. They are made of special materials (such as carbon ceramic or high-performance cast iron). They generate strong braking force through high-speed rotation and friction with brake pads. The key to their design lies in efficient heat dissipation and powder removal. They often have holes, markings (slots) or ventilation ducts to cope with extremely high temperatures (up to 1200°C) and high-intensity use, ensuring braking performance, sensitivity and durability under harsh track conditions.
Core features and design
1. Material and structure:
Carbon ceramic brake disc: commonly used in F1 racing cars, extremely light (1-1.2kg), high temperature resistant up to 1200°C, but has a short life and needs to be replaced frequently.
High-Performance Cast Iron: Used in GT racing by brands such as AP Racing, using the HT250 (G3000) standard to achieve strength and heat dissipation through precise control of chemical composition and mechanical properties.
Two-piece design: Common in high-performance cars, the brake disc surface and the wheel hub (joint head) are connected through floating or fixed, allowing thermal expansion and contraction to improve stability.
2. Heat dissipation and powder discharge (vents/marking/punching):
Ventilation duct: Built-in complex ventilation duct, which sucks in cold air at high speeds and throws hot air out from the disk surface, taking away the heat.
Drilling/marking: Accelerates the removal of brake dust and muddy water, reduces the "air cavity phenomenon" between the brake pads and the disc, and improves the initial braking performance.
Number and location: The number of holes increases with technological evolution (such as F1 from 100 holes to 1400 holes) to optimize air ducts and heat dissipation efficiency.
3. Performance requirements:
High temperature adaptation: Withstand instantaneous ultra-high temperatures, control brake temperature and prevent failure.
High friction: cooperated with specific high-performance brake pads to provide extremely high friction coefficient (F1 can reach 0.7-0.9).
Durability: Ensure braking performance and lifespan under intense driving. For example, the F1 carbon ceramic disc has a lifespan of only about 1,200km.
Application and selection
Racing brake discs select ventilation duct sizes, hole designs and disc combinations with different heat dissipation efficiencies based on different race tracks (number of curves, length of straights) and racing characteristics.
When upgrading calipers, it is usually recommended to match high-performance brake discs of the same brand and series to achieve the best match and effect.
Difference from ordinary cars
Racing brake discs pursue ultimate performance, and their material, design and manufacturing costs are far higher than those of cast iron discs for household cars, and their lifespan and usage environment are also completely different.
